Ovarian
Ovarian cancer is a worldwide disease, with over 225,000 people being diagnosed with it in 2008. In the US, approximately 21,550 women were diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2009 alone. Ovarian cancer mortality rates are quite high, with approximately 140,153 and 14,600 deaths annually from ovarian cancer worldwide and in the US, respectively. These statistics make ovarian cancer the most lethal cancer of the female reproductive system. It is the fifth most frequent cause of cancer death in women. The prognosis for women who present with recurrent ovarian cancer is particularly poor, with 55 % of these women dying of their disease within five years. That is largely because there are very few treatment options for women who have a recurrence of their disease if they fail to respond to platinum-based therapies.
