Serina will focus its initial clinical efforts on advancing SER-203, a novel polymeric derivative of a potent anti-cancer drug known as irinotecan. Irinotecan is a member of the class of drugs known as topoisomerase I inhibitors — one of the most potent classes of anti-cancer drugs ever developed. In addition to being chemically loaded with multiple molecules of irinotecan on a single polymer, SER-203 is actively targeted to a unique receptor that is highly expressed on the surface of many cancer cells. This receptor is not highly expressed on normal cells, thus SER-203 should be specifically taken up by cancer cells that over-express the receptor. Serina has several compounds in its portfolio of anti-cancer drugs, and all of them have shown remarkable advantages over standard types of chemotherapy in mouse xenograft models of human cancer.
